WHERE DID
THE NAME ORIGINATE?
St. Rocco’s Kennel owes its
name to the Patron Saint of Dogs, which is also known as Saint Roch. Born in
France, Saint Rocco was the son of the governor, hence he came from a
prosperous family. At age 20, both his parents died and he decided to go on a
pilgrimage to Rome. There, he took care of the sick people and prayed for them,
however, he ended up being struck by the plague himself. For this reason, he went into the forest
planning to stay there and wait for his death. Legend has it that he managed to
survive in the forest because a dog used to bring him bread every day.
WHO STARTED
ST. ROCCO’S KENNEL?
Fascinated
by this story, the founder of St. Rocco’s
Kennel, Mr. Rob Camilleri decided to name the kennel after the Patron
Saint. The Kennel owes its beginnings to Simba and Nala, two stray dogs that
were rescued by Rob. Rob decided to look after these dogs and take them in
himself. Following this event, Rob realised that just like Simba and Nala, many
other strays were wondering in our streets.
For this
reason, Rob decided to convert his property into a sanctuary for dogs, and to
set off to rescuing dogs and ensuring that they find shelter in his
kennel. For the first few months of his
mission, Rob managed to rescue tens of dogs all by himself. However, as the
number of rescued dogs in the kennel grew, Rob realised that a helping hand
would not hurt.
WHERE ARE WE
NOW?
Today, St. Rocco’s Kennel grew substantially.
There are around 70 dogs living in the sanctuary. With 5 permanent volunteers
and many others giving a helping hand throughout the year, St. Rocco’s Kennel is on the road to becoming bigger by expanding
and being able to welcome more dogs. Nonetheless, a number of obstacles are
faced on a daily basis by the kennel at the moment, including:
- Overpopulation
of dogs
- High
expenditure
- Food
related costs
- Medical
Bills
- Veterinary
Bills
- Electricity
HOW CAN I
HELP?
For this
reason, St. Rocco’s Kennel
appreciates donations of all forms, ranging from monetary donations, vouchers
for pet food or medication, as well as donating some of your free time to give
a helping hand.
WHAT IS OUR
MISSION?
- To rescue
dogs of all sizes, ages and state of health
- To seek
to find loving homes for dogs, and ensuring that these homes are suitable for
their needs.
- To
educate people about being a responsible pet owner.
- To
educate people about proper care of dogs, and hence work in favour of the
general wellbeing of dogs.
- To
attempt to find a loving home for ‘hard-to-adopt’ pets, including senior dogs,
large dogs, or dogs which are sick or have a physical disability.
